Why barefoot footwear for school?
Our little ones spend many hours at school, and if we add rigid footwear to that, we have a combination that is quite detrimental to their musculoskeletal development. Although 98% of babies are born with healthy feet, 70% will suffer from some foot pathology during their lives — with inappropriate footwear being one of the main causes, according to data from the Official College of Podiatrists of the Valencian Community (ICOPCV).
Barefoot or minimalist footwear allows the foot to move as if barefoot, strengthening muscles, improving posture, and preventing long-term deformities.
Characteristics of minimalist footwear
- Wide and anatomical toe box: leaves space for toes to splay when walking, improving balance and stability
- Zero drop: prevents tendon shortening and promotes a natural posture from head to toe
- Thin and flexible sole: connects with the ground and activates foot muscles
- Good fastening system: the foot does not slip and does not have to grip with the toes to keep the footwear on
- No elements that interfere with development: no heel lifts, arch supports, stabilizers, or unnecessary cushioning
Benefits of wearing minimalist footwear at school
- Prevents deformities caused by narrow shoes
- Helps maintain good posture
- Increases sensory experience and contact with the ground
- Strengthens foot muscles with daily use
